The problem I have, as a taper, is this: it will be real easy for many kids to go download in mp3 and then convert the mp3s to wav files, burn disks, and trade them as if they were never encoded as mp3s.

This WILL happen if etree or the archive opens up the floodgates and lets this all roll in mp3, then all of the trouble and expense tapers go to to bring the best possable sound is out the window. Why do I go to the trouble spending 12+ hours uploading a show on my slow connection to make sure the REAL THING is what circulates instead of spending 10 minutes uploading mp3s to my own website? Because I care about the quality and I care about how the show I lug my gear to, guard at the show instead of dancing my ass off, and haul home.. then to do the DAT transfer, adjust levels, remove anomalies, convert to shn, upload.....

I might as well not bother. I suppose some might not care, but remember many of the folks that go out and record this stuff do...

Etree & the IA have been all about lossless compression all along, please DON'T convert any of the shows I have upped or taped to mp3.
